After the Meiji-era (Meiji-era; 1868-1912), people began to reclaim Kushiro region, but it was not such a easy job due to the strick weather condition such as thick sea-fog and severe coldness. Pioneers did put down their root here in spite of the severe nature, and have developed agriculture and dairy farming (See detail of "agriculture and dairy farming"), mining and manufacturing (See detail of "mining and manufacturing"), forestry(See detail of "forestry"), and fishery(See detail of "fishery") These efforts by the early settlers establish the fundmental of economic activities of Kushiro region.
