As it is known as the largest wetland in Japan, Kushiro wetland is also known as such an important habitat for various precious animals, such as Japanese crana, the only crane to reproduce in Japan. For a while ago, Japanese crane was considered to be almost extinguished due to the heavy development and overexploitation, but throughout the conservation acitivity for Japanese crane, the number of those has been recovering around the area of Kushiro wetland.
Not only Japanese crane, but also others such as sea eagle, black woodpecker, and siberian salamander are known as scarce species at Kushiro wetland. These area able to habitat at limited environment, so the Kushiro wetland has taking an important role as habitat for them
